NZIOB Charitable Trust Projects $5–$10 Million Award

Nigel Bannan of Cook Brothers Construction received a Highly Commended award for his work on the Dark Sky Project in Tekapo. Nigel was also the Category Winner. The judges said the successful outcome is testament to Nigel’s strengths as both a builder and a communicator.

Steel Construction NZ Projects $10–$20 Million Award

Craig Harris of Naylor Love Canterbury was awarded Excellence for his work on New World Durham Street in Christchurch. Craig’s team-building skills and management of cultural differences helped enable the successful delivery of this complicated project.

Carters Projects $20–$35 Million Award

James Sutherland of CMP Construction was awarded Excellence for his work on the Life Apartments project in Auckland. He overcame the project challenges through his strengths in design, construction planning, and risk mitigation, achieving an excellent result on a difficult site. 

GIB Projects $35-$100 Million Award

Carl Bohnen of Naylor Love Wellington was awarded Excellence for his work on the Wellington East Girls’ College Major Redevelopment project. Carl’s leadership and communication skills ensured the success of a highly complex and challenging project.

BBD Projects Above $100 Million Award

James Reed of Dominion Constructors was awarded Excellence for his work on the University of Auckland Waiparuru Hall project. James embraced technology, using BIM to simplify and enhance the build process. He demonstrated excellent leadership, promoted innovative solutions, and utilised technology to enhance project delivery.

James Hardie Innovation Award

Baran Balaban of Spiral Drillers Civil in Auckland was awarded Excellence for his work on the Team Workshop initiative. The judges said Baran's innovations produced measurable production savings, and improved health and safety results by removing difficult manual tasks, resulting in a ‘win-win’ for all stakeholders on the job.

Site Safe & CHASNZ Safety Excellence Award

Teck Khing (TK) Yong and Daniel Chang Liu of Livefirm Construction in Auckland were awarded Excellence for their work on the Livefirm Mitresaw Dust Control Station initiative. TK and Daniel have designed an innovative, mobile, cyclone and bucket system that uses a cyclone effect to trap dust. This innovation produced multiple health and safety benefits, and resulted in an enhanced working environment.

Dahua Technology Consultants Award

Kelly Hoara of Griffiths & Associates in Whangarei was awarded Excellence for his work on the Otangarei Papakāinga project. The project design, which followed traditional Māori village design principles, proved challenging for the consent applications. Kelly’s involvement in the consenting process went well beyond what is typically covered by a project manager.

Hays Interdisciplinary Collaboration Award

The Mt Eden Corrections Facility Building C Team was awarded Excellence in this category, and are also the Category Winners. The judges commented that the team was committed to collaboration, creating a site office to be shared by the client representative, consultants, and contractor, for the duration of the project. This collaboration ensured a well-executed project.
