We do this with a small but dedicated home team along with numerous passionate volunteers around the motu who give their time and energy to help our members grow.
The New Zealand Chapter of the Australian Institute of Builders (AIB) was formed
The New Zealand Institute of Building became incorporated and an independent organisation.
The Inaugural Building of the Year Awards were held in Wellington. Four years later these became the Building Excellence Awards which grew and changed over the years and are now known as the Building People Awards.
The Institute's first website was created.
The Institute celebrated its 40th birthday and announced there would be a brand refresh to take the Institute into the next 40 years.
The trading name of the organisation changed from NZ Institute of Building to Building Institute Aotearoa. The legal name remains the same. A new look and feel were launched at the same time.
If you have any questions about the brand and name update take a look at our Brand update FAQs.

Our popular annual awards event has been running since 1994. Over the years it's undergone a number of name changes but the focus has remained the same. Our awards celebrate people in the building and construction industry doing great things and displaying excellence.
Our awards recognise people at all stages, places and scales – from our inspiring Next Gen already making a difference to those working in major projects on site and behind the scenes.
Established in 2017 by the New Zealand Institute of Building Charitable Trust, the NZIOB Charitable Trust Awards supports worthy individual endeavors for the betterment of the construction industry.
“How the NZIOB Charitable Trust Award has transformed what Ged could achieve in his Masters is incredible. I believe it has set him up as a potential contributor to the transformation of our industry.”
