The NZIOB Southern Region Committee hosted an awards evening last night to celebrate the achievements of industry students from Ara’s School of Construction. NZIOB Members were invited to attend, to both show their support for what will be their future construction industry peers, and to celebrate the festive season with fellow members and industry colleagues.

On Thursday, 26 November, the 18th annual NZIOB/NorthTec Student Awards evening was held at the NorthTec Apprentice Restaurant in Whangarei. This awards programme represents a close collaboration between NZIOB and Northtec, at which the polytechnic’s top construction students are recognised.

Work is underway by the Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation (BCITO) to get a better picture of the number of construction and infrastructure workers needed by the construction sector over the next 15 years. The research project will forecast workforce demand to cover residential and commercial construction as well as civil infrastructure like roading, three waters (drinking, waste, and storm), hospitals and schools.

The number of female apprentices working in the male-dominated trades (such as construction) more than doubled this year, from 845 last year to 1785. This has come as part of a broader spike since the Labour-led Government made all apprenticeships free in July this year, part of an effort to stimulate the economy after the Covid-19 outbreak. Meet one all-women building team who are breaking barriers in the building industry.

The NZIOB Central Region Committee, along with contractors McKee Fehl, are hosting a GIB® sponsored site visit to the much-anticipated Wellington Regional Children’s Hospital, a highly technical project that will house state-of-the-art facilities, uniquely designed to treat children, in one centralised space.

The annual Southern Region Golf Day was held on the 6th of November in Christchurch, with 30 teams and over 100 players in attendance. Blessed with fine weather, the day went off without a hitch, with hole sponsors adding another layer of fun to the day by hosting activities and competitions at their respective holes.
