<p>More than 600 construction industry professionals came together on Friday 30 August to celebrate the winners of the 2024 NZ Building People Awards. The gala dinner celebrating the excellence of the people behind the projects took place at the Viaduct Events Centre in Tāmaki | Auckland.</p><p>Winners and highly commended finalists, along with a couple of special mentions, were announced across ten categories with a Supreme Winner named to top the evening off. The Resene Next Gen Awards were also announced as part of the evening with three winners and one supreme winner named.</p><p> Congratulations to all the finalists, special mentions, highly commended and winners of the 2024 NZ Building People Awards.</p><p> </p><p> </p>
<p> At a recent NZ Construction Industry Council (NZCIC) AGM, the Institute of Building’s CE Pamela Bell was accepted as the incoming Chair.</p><p>The NZCIC is an industry association of associations in the building and construction, design and property sectors. The membership associations who are part of the council represent about 200,000 workers of the 300,000 total workers in Aotearoa.</p><p>“I follow in the footsteps of Malcolm Fleming who chaired the Council through a period of great turbulence with Covid and other changes. I’m grateful to Malcolm and the other members of the Council leadership for their support.”</p><p>Pamela is looking forward to continuing to build strong relationships with other associations, and to leading more conversations about the future of associations and preparing for a resilient future.</p>

<p>Morgan Poi won the Projects under $ 10 Million Award category at the 2023 NZ Building People Awards. He was nominated for his work as Site Manager for Hawkins on the Hawke’s Bay Prison Staff Facilities project.<br> <br>What made Morgan stand out amongst a strong field was his humility, empathetic leadership, positivity, and his commitment to people. These qualities became particularly important in responding to Hawke’s Bay’s flooding in February 2023 where Morgan went above and beyond to support his colleagues.<br> <br>The judges said “It is an absolute privilege to have Morgan Poi as the winner in this category. Morgan has had a clear impact on all stakeholders on the project, he leads from the trenches with empathy and understanding.”<br> <br>We asked Morgan a few questions to get to know him better.</p>
<p>Helen Moate won the Consultants Award at the 2023 NZ Building People Awards. Helen spent nine years working on the Te Wao Nui, Wellington Childrens Hospital, in Pōneke | Wellington in an unusual role coordinating all parties and stakeholders to the project.</p><p>The Award judges said “Helen is very clearly a people person with empathy and humanity at the core of everything she does and exceptional skills in management and leadership. We could see it wasn’t just about bringing people together for the sake of the project but also recognising the individual needs of the team members.”<br><br>Helen is a Senior Project Manager at The Building Intelligence Group in Pōneke | Wellington and a member of the Institute’s Central Region Committee.</p><p>We asked Helen a few questions to get to know her better.</p>

<p>Amanda Stanes is the General Manager at Keystone Trust. Amanda joined the Keystone Trust in 2020, bringing more than 30 years’ experience in fundraising and relationship management to the role. </p><p>Amanda spoke at BuildUP24 in the Next Gen Quick-fire showcase about understanding and getting the best out of the next generation. Her presentation went down so well we wanted to share her thoughts with you here. The following is taken from Amanda’s notes for her presentation and slides that went with it. </p>
<p>On 15 March 2024, following an awesome day at BuildUP24, the Institute held our first Internal Hui.</p><p>This was a half-day event for all those in the Home Team, National Board, Regional Committees, and Young Professional Advisors to get together in person. The Institute is made up of many passionate volunteers across the motu. Each region focuses on their own patch, so this was an opportunity to get to know those from other regions and understand the big picture strategy too. The plan is for this Internal Hui to be repeated every two years alongside the BuildUP event.</p><p>The Internal Hui was a chance to get to know others better by putting faces to names along with getting on the same page with where the Institute is strategically heading.</p>
<p>BuildUP24 is a practical and hands on one-day conference taking place on 14 March at Aotea Centre in Tāmaki | Auckland. The day will be a mix of keynote speakers to inspire and provoke thoughts, panel discussions to dive into themes of people, productivity and performance – focusing on practical solutions; and roundtable sessions to get into detail and put ideas into practice.</p><p>Read about who will be there and why you should be paying attention.</p><p> </p>
<p>Anni Zhou was the Northern Region winner and National winner of the Next Gen Award in 2023. Since winning Anni has gotten more involved with the Institute and has joined the Young Professional Advisors committee. </p><p>Anni is passionate about the use of digital construction methods. Her Master’s research project is entitled “Digital approach to track embodied carbon in building through life cycle assessment.” Anni works as a Professional Quantity Surveyor for Rider Levett Bucknall while she completes her studies at Massey University in Tāmaki Makaurau | Auckland part-time.</p><p>We asked Anni a few questions to get to know her better. </p>
