Guest Speaker: Greg Murphy
Built for speed. Driven by passion. Leading with purpose.
Motorsport legend and road safety advocate, Greg Murphy, is one of New Zealand’s most iconic racing figures. His fearless presence on the track and unwavering commitment to the sport of V8 Supercars has earned him a place among the greats, celebrated for his resilience and legendary Bathurst performances that defied expectation and silenced critics.

Murph’s racing career began to gain traction in the early 1990s, with a standout victory at the 1994 New Zealand Grand Prix. He quickly established himself internationally, placing second in the GT2 Class at Le Mans in 1996, and soon after, dominated the endurance racing scene alongside Craig Lowndes with victories at Bathurst and Sandown. Over the following decade, Murphy racked up over 400 V8 Supercar starts, four Bathurst 1000 wins, and secured the fastest lap at Mount Panorama in 2003—a record that stood unbroken for seven years.
Beyond his race-day accolades, Murphy was part of high-profile driving teams, earning the respect of competitors and the loyalty of fans across Australasia. His later successes in the V8SuperTourer series, including winning the inaugural race at Hampton Downs in 2012 and back-to-back Sprint Series titles, cemented his status as a dominant force in New Zealand motorsport.
After stepping out of the driver’s seat, Murph shifted gears into television, becoming a motorsport presenter and race-day commentator. Off the track, his passion turned toward making New Zealand roads safer. As a fierce advocate for road safety reform, he launched “Murph in Schools” in 2010 in collaboration with the Motor Trade Association, later partnering with Holden NZ in 2019 to develop a targeted programme for young drivers.
An avid cyclist and licensed helicopter pilot, Murphy’s focus, discipline, and leadership continue to inspire, both within motorsport and beyond.
The NZIOB Charitable Education Trust raises money to provide grants and scholarships to students and young professionals within the build environment.
