The Building Institute Fishing Day on Thursday 12 March 2026 at Gulf Harbour Yacht Club will be a fun day of fishing and friendly competition. We want to make sure you all stay safe out on the water so you can return to shore and we can all enjoy ourselves at the prizegiving!

Here’s a reminder of the event’s Health and Safety Guidelines to keep you and your boat crew safe. The boat’s ‘communications lead’ is in charge of briefing everyone on the boat.

1. Life Jackets

Take them and wear them. Boats, especially ones under 6m in length, can sink very quickly. Wearing a life jacket increases your survival time in the water. All non-boat anglers must also ensure that they wear a life jacket if there is a risk of falling into the water.

2. Skipper Responsibility

The skipper is responsible for the safety of everyone on board and for the sail-ability and safe operation of the boat. This includes the safe condition of the boat and current insurance is in place. Stay within the limits of your vessel and your experience. Under Maritime New Zealand law a skipper can be prosecuted for operating a boat in a manner that causes unnecessary danger. With this in mind, a responsible skipper will never operate under the influence of alcohol or allow an intoxicated person to operate their boat.
3. Communications

Take two separate waterproof ways of communicating so we can help you if you get into difficulties. For example, this may be two cell phones in a waterproof cover or bag, or one phone and the boat’s VHF radio.

4. Marine Weather

New Zealand’s weather can be highly unpredictable. Check the local marine weather forecast before you go and expect both weather and sea state changes. Skippers must regularly check the forecast for changes prior to and throughout the event.

5. Avoid Excess Alcohol

Safe boating and alcohol do not mix. Things can change quickly on the water. You need to stay alert and aware. This not only applies to skippers but for all anglers involved in the competition also. Skippers are responsible for keeping their boat guests safe.
6. Health and Safety Incidents and Concerns
All participants must report any Health and Safety incidents that occur during the fishing competition to the Event Organiser – the NZ Institute of Building (see contact below). If a participant is concerned about anything during the fishing competition, they should trust their gut and report it
7. Pre-existing Medical Conditions and/or Allergies
To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, we ask that all skippers and anglers (during the registration process) inform us of any medical conditions that could impact their health or the safety of themselves or others during the event. This includes any medications or essential medical devices, such as EpiPens. All personal information will be kept confidential in compliance with the Privacy Act and will only be disclosed to emergency services in the event of a medical emergency.

Food will be provided after the fishing at the Gulf Harbour Yacht Club. During registration process we will ask for information about any major food allergies that, if ingested, could affect their health and wellbeing during the course of the afternoon.
8. Emergency Management and First Aid
To ensure safety onboard, it is the responsibility of the skipper to ensure that each boat has a fully stocked first aid kit, specific medical devices, supplies or medications to cater for any individual’s  pre-existing conditions or allergies, and an in-service fire extinguisher.
9. Participants from Charter Fishing Boats
All anglers on chartered vessels must adhere to any additional rules from the skipper on that boat. Skippers on chartered boats are asked to adhere to the event rules also, including monitoring and limiting alcohol.
10. Prizegiving at Yacht Club
All event participants are asked to abide by the Health and Safety guidelines of the Yacht Club where the prizegiving will be held, along with food and beverage consumption.
